The assessment of personality

by Professor Peter Tyrer and Dr Caroline Methuen

The assessment of personalityThis module is designed to help psychiatrists and their colleagues assess personality status in the patients they see. It does so by introducing abnormal aspects of personality status in a dimensional context, first identifying the main traits in the personality and then determining if these create problems for that person and for others.

Video is used throughout the module to help illustrate the information. However, it is not intended to be a module for training in ICD or DSM personality disorders as these are dealt with elsewhere by Professor Patricia Casey in her module The diagnosis of personality disorder in clinical practice.

Unfortunately the assessment of disturbed personality remains too often a covert activity; this module should bring it more into the open.
