Much has been written on cultural competence as a way
of improving the care received by patients from diverse and
different cultural backgrounds.
There are certain implicit assumptions
surrounding the clinician’s knowledge base and attitudes and
towards the notion of cultural competence, which this module
attempts to challenge.
This module is intended as a guide for those
desiring to improve their practice and the outcomes for patients
from diverse cultural groups, and for those willing to look at
their own cultural biography as a significant factor affecting the
therapeutic relationship.
The module also encourages reflection and
challenge to familiar methods of practice, whilst undertaking safe
practice and innovation where appropriate.
