Learning outcomes

By the end of this module, we hope you will be able to:

• distinguish between sexual identity and gender identity

• appreciate the need for a multi-assessment period to differentiate between other clinical conditions which may present with gender-related symptoms

• list the comorbid psychiatric diagnosis which may present in patients with gender dysphoria

• differentiate between gender dysphoria and the spectrum of transgenderism

• demonstrate the role of psychological support for the patient with gender dysphoria

• detail the eligibility and readiness criteria to ensure safe progression of patients through the real life experience and transition to the opposite gender

• identify those patients where psychotherapy is indicated.
