Helping the addicted doctor

by Dr Elizabeth Hare and Dr Malcolm Bruce

Helping the addicted doctorAs a consultant psychiatrist you will already know a good deal about addiction problems. This may only partly prepare you when you encounter colleagues, be they junior, senior or students, with substance misuse problems. You may also be at risk of developing or relapsing into such difficulties yourself.

Dealing with colleagues with such problems is complicated by the professional, legal and ethical aspects. This is particularly so for doctors taking on a treatment role where such issues are in tension with the doctor-patient relationship.

By selecting this module you have indicated you want to improve your skills in this area. The video clips in this module feature an actor improvising from a script taken from a longer interview with a doctor who has been under GMC supervision.
