Dr Badrakalimuthu has been PBL tutor for medical students at University of East Anglia and is involved in medical student teaching in University of Cambridge. He has a masters in neuroscience from King’s College London and a PG Diploma in Medical education and Leadership from the University of Bedfordshire.


Dr Badrakalimuthu organised and ran the PBL based MRCPsych course for core trainees in Norfolk & Waveney psychiatry rotation from August 2007 to March 2010. He has organised and conducted workshops on learner-centred teaching for delegates at the Annual Summer Meeting of Eastern division of the Royal College of Psychiatrists.

Dr de Waal gained his MD at the Free University of Amsterdam (1989), following which he trained in the UK, becoming a Consultant in Norfolk in 1998. From March 2003 until April 2010 he was Coordinating Tutor for the Norfolk Training Scheme. In 2004 he started Norfolk’s own MRCPsych and after a few years he revamped the course, adopting Problem-Based Learning as the main learning method. He adapted this method for the purposes of postgraduate medical education and this course has seen pass rates of the Royal College membership consistently at around double the average national pass rate.


At the end of 2007 Dr de Waal was appointed Head of School of the fourth largest postgraduate school of psychiatry in the UK. The role was redesigned ‘post-Darzi’: he is now Associate Postgraduate Dean for Psychiatry for the East of England. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
