Learning outcomes

By the end of the module, we hope that you will:

• be aware of the trend in escalating alcohol consumption in both older men and women, particularly in certain ethnic groups
  
  
• appreciate the differences between older and younger
  people in terms of assessment and drug interactions
  
  
• be familiar with the use of psychological techniques in addressing substance misuse
  
  
• understand the need to assess comorbid conditions (particularly depression and cognitive impairment) as well as associated physical comorbidity
  
  
• know about the epidemiology of other substances of misuse in older people
  
  
• be aware of the range of pharmacological and psychosocial interventions for substance misuse in older populations.
