Treating depression in later life

by Prof Robert Baldwin, Dr Deepak K Sachdeva and Dr Amit Nulkar

Treating depression in later lifeDepression in later life is a challenging and rewarding condition to treat.

Challenging because it often overlaps with physical illness, which complicates the presentation and in turn is often implicated in aetiology. Also, there is interplay with cognitive impairment.

Rewarding because evidence-based treatment brings encouraging outcomes.

Treatment is the main emphasis in this module but we cover other relevant aspects to give a rounded perspective. Some things you will learn about include:

  • the nature and frequency of late-life depression

  • why the presentation is often not straightforward and how to improve recognition and detection of late-life depression

  • the crucial interplay of depressive disorder in later life with physical comorbidity and cognitive impairment

  • how to improve outcomes.
