Learning outcomes

 

By the end of the module, we hope that you will gain an understanding of:

 

  • the linguistic issues involved in interpreter-mediated interviews;

 

  • the difference between translation and interpretation;

 

  • common errors in the interpreting process;

 

  • the particular status of bilingual persons; 

 

  • the issues arising from psychiatric interviewing and psychotherapy conducted in a person's second language

 

  • the interpretation problems peculiar to psychiatry and the effect of using unqualified interpreters;

 

  • the pitfalls of using a patient’s relatives or friends as interpreters and why this is to be avoided;

 

  • how to begin practical working in interpreter-mediated situations.
